Evaluation the effect of Teucrium polium plus Aloe vera gel on episiotomy wound healing, pain intensity and patient’s satisfaction in primiparous women: A single blind randomized clinical trial

Background: Our aim was to provide scientific evidence studying the effect of Teucrium polium plus Aloe vera gel on episiotomy wound healing, pain intensity and patient’s satisfaction in primiparous women compared to placebo. Methods: This study is single blind randomized clinical trial that performed on 100 participants. Teucrium polium plus Aloe vera or placebo gel were administered twice on location of episiotomy wound for 10 days, in intervention and control groups, respectively. Outcome measures included pain and healing wound by REEDA scale (redness, edema, ecchymosis, discharge, and approximation), patients’ satisfaction, evaluation of side effects. Results: Our results shows that the two groups had a statistically significant difference regarding REEDA score at 4th and 10th day hours after delivery (p<0.05). The Teucrium polium plus Aloe vera gel group had a better wound healing over time compared to the placebo. Moreover, lower statistically significant score were reported regarding pain at 4th (5.80±1.34 vs. 6.79±1.42) and 10th (1.71±0.88 vs. 2.58±0.91) postpartum days in Teucrium polium plus Aloe vera gel compared to the placebo group ( p<0.05). The results of our study show that patient satisfaction was significantly better in intervention compared to control group in 4th (3.45±1.17 vs. 5.42±1.37) and 10th (1.33±0.57 vs. 2.50±1.21) postpartum days (P <0.05). Conclusion: The findings of this study show that Teucrium polium plus Aloe vera gel results to better episiotomy wound healing and patients’ satisfaction and less pain intensity compared to placebo.
